Description: Comprises diary covering his voyage to the United Kingdom on the vessel 'Monterrey'. Describes the voyage, his impressions of Hawaii, Hollywood and the United States through which he travelled before transshipping to the 'Queen Mary' and sailing to England. Discusses his conversations with United States politicians while in the United States and gives impressions of the mood in Britain and in the British parliament on the eve of the coming war. Gives detailed account of the British Labour Party conference which he attended in May and June 1939. Records his impressions of the Scandinavian countries the Soviet Union, Poland and Germany, all of which he toured between late June and August 1939. Includes a separate diary of a visit to the Netherlands in October 1939, undertaken to collect material for a talk to be given on the Empire Service of the BBC. Included in the diaries are letters to William Sutch, "Bob" at the New Zealand High Commission and to Morgan Williams, written between August 1939 and May 1940.
