Chief of Ngati Rangi, Nga Puhi. One of a group of Nga Puhi Maori who travelled to England with William Jenkins, 1863-1864 on the 'Ida Zeigler'. He was from Mangakahia Valley in Northland. At the time of the trip to England he was a widower in his late 30s. He married housemaid Elizabeth Reid in England. Their daughter, Maria Good Hope Wharepapa, was born on board ship. She lived with him for some years in the North, and then he bought her a home in Parnell, Auckland where she lived until her death. Portrait painted by Lindauer in 1895. Physical Description: Mss Provenance: The donor's grandfather was Thomas Jenkins, son of William Jenkins. His second wife (Elisabeth Aslin) sent the autograph book to Colin's father in 1930s; his father in turn gave it to Colin's brother. After his death, his brother's wife gave it to Colin Jenkins.

Description: Handkerchief, with a Stoffels sticker attached at lower left, shows a reproduction of a portrait painting by Gottfried Lindauer of Kamariera Te Hau Takiri Wharepapa. His head is in profile, and he wears a cloak with a woven border, long earrings and two huia feathers. Dated 1968, because a similar handkerchief by the same company was bought new in New Zealand in that year (See Eph-C-MAORI-1968-01).
