Born in Dulwich, London, emigrated to Australia then New Zealand before 1857. Owned land next to Donald McLean in Aorangi, Hastings District, in 1857. Joined volunteer cavalry corps formed by Capt Gordon in Hawkes Bay in 1863, then involved in East Coast land wars during 1865; received commission in Hawkes Bay Militia; in 1866 in charge of Maori prisoners on Chatham Islands then led the Maori Contingent against Te Kooti in 1868. Officer of the N Z Armed Constabulary in Taranaki District (led troops to arrest Te Whiti and Tohu from Parihaka). In 1883 stationed at Kawhia.
