Civil engineer, businessman, politician, runholder. Member of Parliament for Christchurch West and Christchurch City 1871-1881, and for Kaiapoi 1884-1890. Legislative Councillor 1882-1899. Minister of Public Works 1872-1877, and 1884-1887. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p420-421).
