Description: Looking downwards in a northerly direction from Bluff Hill, showing Port Ahuriri in the earliest days of European settlement. A Maori pa or kainga is on a small island immediately below, inside the opening to Ahuriri Spit. Three low dwellings, a fire, and three people are inside a palisade on the island, and canoes with a fourth person are on the right. There is a small settlement on Ahuriri spit with one larger house, canoes pulled up outside, half-a-dozen smaller houses and a fishing boat on shore. The hills of northern Hawkes Bay are in the background This seems to be a very early view, since B-004-009, a similar view dated 1860, shows many more buildings. Likely to be a view from the artist's own home, Milton Grange Estate, one of the earliest homes and farms on top of Bluff Hill, Napier Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Ahuriri harbour and roadstead. There is a barrel on the ground to the left and a short, thick, possibly cut off pole in the foreground The drawing bears a close resemblance to a photograph 'Remains of the pa at Warengaahika, after its capture and destruction in 1865', reference number 1/2-008137-F in the Rhodes Album (PA-1-q-193, p. 90). There are some slight differences between the two images. Rhodes, a farmer in Hawkes Bay, may have visited Waerengaahika himself and stood in the same spot as the photographer; he may have copied the photograph; or he may have been the photographer.
