Born England, the fourth child of William Swainson (1789-1855) and his first wife Mary Parkes (1794-1835). Arrived in New Zealand in 1841. Left New Zealand 7 Mar 1847 and joined Royal Navy. Served on HMS Havannah from Apr 1848, sailing once to New Zealand, but also to the Pacific and based in Australia. Later served in the Crimea and the China Sea, living in China for many years. Married a Scots cousin Lilias Dunlop Finlay ca 1870. They had no children. The couple retired to Portsmouth.

Description: View from the cut down side of Fort Macquarie, looking west towards Dawes Point Battery. There is a soldier standing to attention on the right, inside the Fort, houses on land to the right and the Battery with flag flying on a promontory to the left. H. M. S. Havannah is moored in the harbour in Sydney Cove. The artist's title is incorrect. The view is actually from Bennelong Point, looking at Dawe's Point. The correct identification of this view was provided by James Semple Kerr and Joan Kerr, October 1995, during a visit to the Library.
