Description: View from the cut down side of Fort Macquarie, looking west towards Dawes Point Battery. There is a soldier standing to attention on the right, inside the Fort, houses on land to the right and the Battery with flag flying on a promontory to the left. H. M. S. Havannah is moored in the harbour in Sydney Cove. The artist's title is incorrect. The view is actually from Bennelong Point, looking at Dawe's Point. The correct identification of this view was provided by James Semple Kerr and Joan Kerr, October 1995, during a visit to the Library. Description: Swainson wrote `I intend to give you a regular account of all my proceedings, since I left New Zealand...' and goes on to describe his `romantic wanderings' in these 11 letters written to his sister, Mary, except for the last, to Johnnie. He writes of his voyages to England, describing visiting Valparaiso, the island of La Garta where they collected guano, and spending time in England. He writes also from Sydney and Rio de Janeiro, on the `Havannah', Devonport, the Baltic and Hong Kong in each case describing details of the voyage, his work, and family concerns. Description: The letters are concerned with William Swainson (1789-1855) the naturalist, and are written by members of his family. The letters were written shortly after the family settled in Wellington and describe the voyage out and the life in the new colony. An incomplete letter written by Anne describes her new baby. The early letters are by C L Swainson (brother of William) reporting on William's attitude and efforts to have him change his mind about emigrating.
