Public servant, military leader (Lieutenant-Colonel), writer. Born probably some time between 1831 and 1833, possibly at Manila in the Philippines. Active Maori Wars 1863-1870. Awarded New Zealand Cross 1886. In 1866 married Rose von Dadelszen (d 1869), then in 1870 married Henrietta Elise Lomax.

Description: Typescript transcription of letter attributed to Colonel McDonnell, in which the writer offers comments and corrections on some aspects of Grace's manuscript 'Sketch of the New Zealand war', in particular on the relationship with Māori women, and on Māori spelling and grammar. Discusses General Chute's quarrel with Dr Featherston over the summary execution of a Maori prisoner after the "fight at Okotuku". Letter unsigned, but a handwritten annotation by Angela Hill at the end of letter reads "This letter was written by Col. McDonnell we think". The transcription has some ellipses, presumably where the source document was illegible. Dr Ridley-Smith received the photocopy from Angela Hill. The location of the original is unknown.
