Description: Family photographs of the William Hughes Field family, their home in Everton Terrace, Wellington, with views of Wellington and the harbour taken from various streets nearby. One group of images taken from Kelburn Park in February 1897 show the ship (with an escorting flotilla) in which Lord Glasgow was leaving New Zealand after his term as Governor of New Zealand. A few images show scenes in Christchurch. The yacht `Sunbeam' (privately owned by Lord Brassey) is shown in Wellington Harbour in a number of views. Several photographs shows areas on the outskirts of Wellington. Views fom Pukerua of the hills to the north and Kapiti Island; Otaihanga (with one of a Maori family at their home); Upper Hutt, showing Mr and Mrs Sarjeant's backyard, Mr and Mrs Barber's orchard, and two views of a farm owned by Mr [Martin?]; the coast at Island Bay, and fishermen and their huts at Island Bay. Photographs of Rarotonga include portraits of Ariki Makea Takau and her husband Ngamaru Rongotini; large group scenes at various welcoming celebrations; scenes of life in Rarotonga; and Ariki Makea Takau's residence. The Cook Islands photographs are followed by several newspaper cuttings of Lord Glasgow's visit; followed by views of Snares Island, Campbell Island, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands and Chatham Islands, also with newspaper cuttings. Description: History of early New Zealand with photographs, newspaper and magazine cuttings. Mostly portraits of administrators, and governors. Includes information on the Treaty of Waitangi and the Wairau Affray, with a facsimile of the letter of condolence to the inhabitants of Nelson in New Munster from the Mayor, Alderman, Town Councillors and undersigned inhabitants of the Borough of Wellington. Copies of photographs of Parliament Buildings, including the buildings in Auckland used until 1865, the first building in Molesworth St., Wellington, and Parliament Buildings before the fire in 1907. Also one page devoted to New Zealand's first Labour Ministry with Michael Savage as Prime Minister. Album also includes fold-out panorama of St. John's College, Tamaki, Auckland. This is a copy of a lithograph by Mrs Caroline Harriet Abraham, which she possibly copied from a sketch by John Greenwood from his diary in 1851. (See Record at Ref. no.
