Watt, William Hogg, 1818-1893

Part of the firm Taylor and Watt, merchants and ship-owners. Politician. First mayor of Wanganui. Married Margaret Day on 13 Apr 1846 at Wanganui (New Zealand spectator and Cook Strait's guardian, 27 May 1846, p 2). A fountain (the Watt Fountain) was erected in 1881 by the people of Wanganui in recognition of the many services rendered by William Watt Hogg to the city, sited in the middle of the intersection of Ridgway St and Victoria Ave. See Dictionary of New Zealand Biography / Scholefield Volume 2 p 473-474, and "A Wanganui history" by Maxwell J G Smart and Arthur P Bates, and "Wanganui old settlers" by James Garland Woon, 1902
