Hawke's Bay Philosophical Institute

Founded for the advancement of science, literature and art. Formed 14 September 1874. Founding members included William Colenso, J D Ormond, Bishop of Waiapu (William Williams), J M Gibbes, H R Holder, S Locke, J A Smith, W I Spence, and F W C Sturm. Colenso left a bequest of £200 for the Institute for the benefit of the museum and library. He also left his botanical and zoological specimens to the Institute.

In 1934 became known as the Hawke's Bay branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
