Born in London, and went with his parents to Newfoundland, but then on death of father, returned to England. Came to New Zealand with his mother in 1839 in the 'Adelaide'. Apprenticed to Samuel Revans, and helped to produce the first numbers of the 'NZ Gazette'. Formed a boating club which later became the Wellington Rowing Club. Started the 'Wellington Independent' newspaper, with W E Vincent, George Fellingham, and James Muir. Died 2 Mar 1911 aged 85. Buried in Sydney Street Cemetery, Wellington with his wife Leah (d 1898).

Description: Vignettes referring to current events. Kitchener and Asquith in conversation about Asquith not knowing what to do with Kitchener, who suggests 'Couldn't we get up a war with somebody?'. 'The two Macs' shows MPs Tom McKenzie pursuing another Scots MP in a kilt. The pair are on tour, doing a song and dance act. 'United we stand, divided we arbitrate' shows John Bull and Uncle Sam, walking cheerfully in step, watched enviously by Kaiser Bill. Refers to a proposal that England and America should join in a treaty of unlimited arbitration. 'Wellington pressmen on the scent of a mystery' shows reporters hunting vainly for the Chief Justice, who has locked himself out of sight. The Cathedral is not part of the Square - legal idiocy, shows Christchurch Cathedral. 'St Thomas and the dragon' shows Tommy Taylor as an armed knight fighing against the Christchurch Gas Company, with 'Lake Coleridge scheme' as his lance. A man about to get his tooth crowned is assumed by a passer-by to be going to the Coronation. At the top left, the ex-Finance Minister Arthur Mielziner Myers hands over a bag of £1 million surplus.
