Eiby, George Allison, 1918-1992

A prominent New Zealand seismologist. Educated at St Marks School Wellington and Cathedral Grammar, Christchurch, he became a DSIR cadet in 1939. Apart from 4 years in Britain as a radar mechanic during World War II he remained with the DSIR until he retired, as superintendant of the seismological laboratory, in 1979. He published widely on seismology, astronomy and the history of science. His book `Earthquakes' (1957) became a standard work. His non-scientific interests were extremely wide. He was an authority on the history of theatre, and produced more than 100 plays for local drama societies. He was a founder of the film society movement in New Zealand, was a keen musician and exhibited photos and sketches. He bequeathed the bulk of his collection of books, papers and art to the Alexander Turnbull Library, along with copyright in his work.
