Description: Five large mounted prints of the New Zealand memorial at Le Quesnoy which was unveiled 15 July 1923 Commemorates the capture of Le Quesnoy on 4 Nov 1918 when the leading party of the New Zealand Division entered the town by a scaling ladder over the ramparts of the old Vauban Fort and compelled the surrender of the German garrison holding it. Description: Medal shows the words "Vimy Pilgrimage" around the top rim, above an image of the stone Canadian National Vimy War Memorial and a lower border of poppies. The bar shows the words "Canadian Legion 1935, and a beaver and maple leaf. Canadian troops were victorious in the battle of Vimy Ridge, west of Vimy, France, on 9-12 April 1917. The Canadian War Memorial at Vimy was opened on 1936, before a crowd of 50,000, addressed by King Edward VIII. Quantity: 2 curio(s). Description: Postcards and books of postcards. One group depicts towns in France and Belgium before and after the First World War. These include Albert, Hazebrouck, Meessen (Messines), La Boisselle, and Ypres. There are also a group of war memorials. Another booklet depicts views of Lille, France, and there are several photographs of stirling and Qubec. An album of 23 photomechanical prints depicts Cairo and its environs. Included in this are five post cards of Egypt. The album and the postcards are dated 1916. Eleven photographic postcards published by the Swiss electrical engineering firm, Brown, Boveri & Company, record its involvement in the process of the electrification of the Swiss railway system. Included in this sequence are electric locomotives, a hydroelectric power house, various electrical goods such as turbines, and a view of the BBC factory at Baden. Description: Scenes of the ceremonies surrounding the unveiling of the Longueval Memorial (on 8th October 1922), to men of the New Zealand Division, who fell in the first battle of the Somme in 1910. Dignitaries include Sir Francis Bell, then leader of the New Zealand Legislative Council. Images, none of which have captions, were taken by an unidentified photographer. Description: Shows a monument in the form of a square stone pillar, commemorating German soldiers who fell near Bapaume. It is topped by a stone ball. Near the top is a bas-relief cross with a "W" for Kaiser Wilhelm within it. Inscription is also copied down on page 57, and reads: "Wir neigen das Haupt vor unseren Toten, Die furchtlos und treu ihr leben boten. Was flerblich war brachten wir hier zur Ruh, Ihr Weift zan betreit der hethiat zu. Den in der Hingebring von Bapaume Ze fallenen kameraden zollt feinen Dank, durch dieses Denkmal das XIV Reserve Korps 1914-1918". Translation given by James O'Grady: "We bow our heads before our dead, who unafraid and true, offered their lives for what was mortal. We brought their bodies here to rest, their spirit to be freed to the Homeland. The comrades who fell in the neighbourhood of Bapaume are worthy of this thanks and this monument. The 14th Reserve Corps, 1914-1918". The Australian War Museum states that the monument angered the French because it showed a Polish Cross with the initial "W" (for the Kaiser) on it. Translation: "To the memory of troops of all the armies that took part in the battle of Bapaume.
