Description: Research material mainly relating to Kimble Bent, including correspondence, drafts, notes, clippings, publications and photographs. Includes a letter from Charles Finnerty of Stratford, dated 2 November 1936, in which he mentions that his father knew Kimble Bent; also an extract of a letter from Reverend T G Hammond dated 10 October 1905, relating to Titokowaru; drafts and clippings relating to 'the canoe-builders' story. The publications comprise 'New Plymouth: The holiday centre of New Zealand' and 'West Coast War South Taranaki, 1866-69' by 'Lt Col T McDonnell'. Also includes a clipping with photographic images of Mokoia Island, including Patera Te Ngungukai and tapu stones and objects. Photographs comprise images of F E Maning, Dr Hochstetter (with signature), Wi Tako Ngatata (1880, and ca 1870s), John Webster, Ngamako (taken by Pulman), an unknown Māori man, and a carte de visite with the imprint "W. H. Reed, Photographic Artiste, Shortland Street, Auckland, New Zealand", in an envelope annotated: "Rare photograph of the Revd. Mr. Volkners Widow [Emma] Wepiha Apanui and family sitting in front of house near the willow". The willow tree near the church of the German-born missionary Carl Sylvius Völkner at Opotiki was significant as this is where he was hanged on 2 March 1865. Also includes a juvenile illustrated story, relating to the shipwreck of a ship called the "Fort" (drawn in pencil on paper), probably created by John or Roy Cowan. Title supplied by Library. Description: View towards the south end of Lake Taupo, showing snow-covered Ruapehu, and steaming Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ketetahi crater in left background. In centre distance is Motutaiko Island. Figures wading in water at left foreground are holding fishing nets. There are two small fishing craft at right foreground, and craft with sails further off. Inscription at lower edge, gives name of engraver, "Sargent" - Alfred Louis Sargent. M.E. Charton's edition appears to be a reprint of the original 1865 edition of "Le tour du monde..." Description: Holograph manuscript letter in German by Ferdinand von Hochstetter to Georg von Frauenfeld, dated Wien [Vienna], 13 April [1860]. Also original manuscript folder with details of Hochstetter, including life dates, affiliations, and notes on publications and explorations. The letter is addressed simply as "dear friend!", but the context of the message makes is clear that the attributed addressee or recipient of the letter is fellow member of the Novara expedition, Georg von Frauenfeld, who was in charge of setting up the new Novara Museum in the Augarten, Vienna. The letter makes reference to the moa skeleton Hochstetter brought back from New Zealand and is now ready to go on display in the new museum, which opened at the end of April 1860. The letter also makes reference to "Dr Jäger" who was responsible for erecting the skeleton and making plaster cast copies for distribution to other museums. Description: Shows the islands and peninsulas of Auckland Harbour looking towards Rangitoto. Library has a copy of Hochstetter's article from "Le tour du monde" at q919.31 HOCH. It is dated by the inscription "I Semestre 1865" in ink at top of first page. See also the slightly differing version in Hochstetter's 1863 German version (page 4), and 1867 English version (Page 5). These are acknowledged as being from a sketch by Mr Heaphy. Other Titles - Auckland Harbour. Extended Title - From: La terre a vol d'oiseau (unknown publisher), page 867. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Le havre d'Auckland. (Voy. p. 870.) - Dessin de Lancelot. Hochstetter visited New Zealand in 1858-1859. He published "Neuseeland" in 1863. His article "Voyage a la Nouvelle-Zelande" appeared in "Le tour du monde..." vol. XI, 1er. semestre 1865, pages 273-320. This image appeared on page 273, inscribed by D. Lancelot, with C. Laplante as the engraver; it acknowledges that it is drawn after M. F. de Hochstetter. In turn Hochstetter's books acknowledge an earlier sketch by Heaphy.
