Description: The personal, copy-edited, reminiscences of Vile who describes his life as a journalist and editor, newspaper people, political personalities and events in New Zealand. He describes living and working in Melbourne and St Arnaud, Victoria, and his experiences of unionism, his return to NZ in 1889 and working on the `Wairarapa star', his work with the Liberal Party and Richard John Seddon, his move to other newspapers including ones in Hastings, Eketahuna, Oamaru, Woodville, and Christchurch. He describes many of the politicians and other people he met during his working life including John Ballance, Sir John McKenzie, the Plunger (an incarnation of the Jubilee Plunger who was in Australia), G P Donnelly, Shanley (a reporter), his father, Job Vile, Capt Logan, F M B Fisher, the Prince of Wales's visit, Nelle Scanlan, Frank Milner, Sir James Ferguson, Lorimer/McCluskey (a possible member of the Kelly gang), Baird, William Milne, Alexander McMinn, Jock Morris, George Forbes, Capt Russell, Sir Maurice O'Rorke, Sir Thomas Wilford, Tom Duncan, Thomas Lindsay Buick and others. Recalls being at Waitaki High School during time of Frank Milner, well-known headmaster. Discusses father's occupation as photographer in Wanganui. Outlines post-school employment on North Otago Times, Ashburton Guardian and Christchurch Press before changing careers and working for Teal for thirty years. Describes religious upbringing as Wesleyan [Methodist]. Refers to maternal grandfather, Rev Dr William Morley. Details history of Wesley College's movements and nature of College life in the 1920s, then known as Wesley Training College and refers to original charter which gave prominence to provision for Maori, Polynesian and `necessitous European children'.
