The vessel called at Whangaroa Harbour in northern New Zealand where it was attacked by Maori, and most of the crew and passengers killed. Elizabeth was one of four survivors. Description: Six-panelled account of the capture and blowing up of the Boyd in Whangaroa Harbour in 1809 in retaliation for its captain's whipping of a local chief known as George These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. Description: Title continues: `...and massacre of the Captain and crew, by the natives of Wangaroa New Zealand' also, `Settlement of Shoalhaven, NSW, 1822'. Berry describes the events surrounding the `Boyd' some twenty years later. Pasted at the end is a clipping from the `Rotorua Morning Post' (13 Mar 1946) `The Massacre of the Boyd' by George Mackaness. Source of title - Transcribed A note at the end reads: `The above statement is by Alexander Berry - Super Cargo of the ship `City of Edinburgh' (Simon Pattison, Master).
