Antarctic explorer, naval officer (Commander), writer. Born Akaroa, son of H T Worsley, a farmer; family moved to Fendalton, Christchurch, 1883. Cadet for New Zealand Shipping Company, serving on "Wairoa", "Tutanekai" and "Himemoa"; master of the "Amokura". Appointed navigation officer by Sir Ernest Shackleton on the "Endurance", the 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and played a major role in saving the stranded party, getting them safely to South Georgia. Returned to England in 1917 where he was inducted into the Royal Navy and commanded the mystery ship "PQ61" used for anti-submarine warfare, winning the DSO. Served again with Shackleton on the "Quest", 1921; hunted for treasure in the Pacific in 1930s. Fought in Norway and was given another command during World War II. Died in Surrey, as Commander instructor, Greenwich Royal Naval College.
