Gilfillan, John Gordon, 1839-1875

Amateur landscape artist and son of John Alexander Gilfillan and his second wife Mary Bridges. He escaped the massacre of his mother and siblings in 1847, and moved to Australia with his father later that year, but later returned to New Zealand. He kept a diary and made sketches as he travelled from Wanganui to Rotorua on 22 February - 14 May 1875, but was drowned on 27 May 1875, at age 35 in a canoe accident in a gale on Lake Rotorua between Ohinemutu and Mokoia Island. His father's portrait of him as a child is held (in 2007) in the Fletcher Trust Collection.
