Waikato leader, newspaper editor, warrior, secretary to the Maori King. Ngati Mahuta. Editor and chief writer for the King Movement's newspaper. The printing press he supervised at Ngaruawahia was a gift in 1860 from Archduke Maximilian to two Waikato Maori who had trained at the state printing house at Vienna. Te Tuhi was a regular model for the painter Goldie whom he met in 1901. He was also photographed (see file print of photograph 1/2-027119). He was a cousin of King Tawhiao. In 1884, he visited the Grace family in England with King Tawhiao. (See Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, vol 1, 1769-1869, p 510-511)

Includes: - A young boy, Eidan [or Ewan?] C Frazer [or Fraser] taken by Tadema of Auckland, in 1923. The subject is four years old. Also includes a clipping relating to the filming of 'Rewi's Last Stand'. - Lieutenant Colonel D. C. Bates dressed in army uniform, taken by Alan Spicer of Wellington, 3 July 1919. - "The Korotangi. Photo'd in Poneke 1903. J Cowan" with envelope. The annotations on the back also say "carved stone bird of Tainui'. - Patara Te Tuhi dressed in a pake (Māori cape), and wearing a shark tooth earring, kuru pounamu (pounamu ear pendant) with ribbons, and feathers. His facial moko is clearly visible. The annotation on the back incorrectly spells his name as "Parata te Tuhi". The photograph is patented to the New Zealand Government Tourist Department. - Captain M. T. Clayton. The other is taken from a higher vantage point, and features mainly houses, with trees in the background. This image is attributed to W. A. Collis, dated 1881. Labelled "Parihaka. No. 51". - Autographed portrait of Captain Joseph Corbett-Scott, circa 1870, wearing an army uniform. Annotations on the back say he was the captain of the "Pukekohe Rifles". - A portrait of a painting of Tukukino. It is a cropped image from Lindauer's 1878 painting of Tukukino. Also an annotated envelope that this print was in. - An envelope with annotations saying "Photos of Raureti, Pou-patete and Paterangi" which contained: A portrait of Raureti Te Huia as a young man, wearing a korowai, with tassles and a kiwi feather border, and holding a pounamu mere; a cropped portrait of Pou-patete Huihi wearing a korowai; a portrait of an unknown Māori man wearing a suit and a kahu huruhuru (feather cloak) with triangular patterns. Description: Contains copies of speeches by King Tawhiao and others, on the occasion of the laying down of arms in 1881, together with a narrative account of this and related events. Also a listing of Kingitanga supporters in the Hauraki and Bay of Plenty, where hapu have signed over their land to the mana of King Tawhiao; the list is of the hapu affiliated to the Kingitanga, the names of members of the hapu and the rohe of the hapu. Contains copies of letters from King Tawhiao to various politicians warning them not to heed the land claims of various people with regard to the Poutama block near Mokau, because he controlled the land . The item also contains a `doomsday book' of Kingitanga supporters in the Hauraki and Bay of Plenty, where hapu have signed over their land to the mana of King Tawhiao; the book contains a list of hapu that affiliated to the Kingitanga, the names of members of the hapu and the rohe of the hapu.
