Tomoana, Paraire Henare, 1868?-1946

Ngati Te Whatu-i-apiti and Ngati Kahungungu leader, sportsman, composer, newspaper publisher. He came from the Hastings area. He is noted as the composer of `Pokarekare ana', `E pari ra', and `Tahi nei taru kino'. He died in 1946. For birth dates, the DNZB (Vol 3, 1901-1920, p534-536, T38) says he was probably born in 1874 or 1875. However, an obituary published in the Daily Telegraph, 15 April 1946, says he was aged 78 at his death in 1946, giving his date of birth as probably 1868.
