Description: Maker(s) not identified. Statue of a standing woman, a crown on her head, wearing a long flowing patterned garment.The figure represents a goddess and has a bindi on her forehead. Likely a Japanese-manufactured figurine of the Chinese seafarer's goddess Ma Zu Po or Mazu. The figure may be a Buddhist or Daoist one. It may be the Chinese seafarer's goddess Ma Zu Po, or Mazu, the Daoist Queen of Heaven and Holy Mother. Seafarers prayed or sacrificed to this goddess for fine weather and safe conduct. Description: On the left, a buddhist priest holding a sun umbrella is being offered food by a woman outside her house in Kandy, Ceylon. The frame of the picture is decorated with flowers of a climber. On the left: The caves near Moulmein, Rangoon. View from inside the cave looking out to the plain below, showing a buddha and stupa at the entrance. The frame is decorated with a sprig of [frangipani?] on the upper lefthandside The left-hand view was published without the square frame and flower decoration as a wood engraving in The last voyage. Description: Standing portrait of a young Buddhist figure in a black-edged pale yellow robe and white skirt. His left thumb and first finger form a circle, and his right hand is palm out towards the viewer. At his feet are plants (flowers and miniature trees) and behind him lies a river and Indian-style buildings with a red plain beyond. The figure may be a self-portrait. The artist, who visited the Library in 1993 has provided further information about this work. It was painted in 1945 while he was a student boarding with Blanche Harding in Christchurch. He had recently read a book on Buddhism, which had a strong influence on him at the time and encouraged in him ideals of asceticism Inscriptions: Verso - title and date in ball-point pen.
