The Arawa I, a clipper-type steamship, was the first steamship in the Shaw, Savill fleet, built in 1884, ca 5000 tons. After 31 years' service under various owners she was sunk by submarine in 1915. See "The Shaw Savill line : one hundred years of trading" by Sydney D Waters.

Description: The diary of 13 year old Elizabeth describes voyage to New Zealand on board the `Arawa', giving details of fellow passengers, family and ship board activities. Entries are dated 7 July 1892 to 14 August 1892. It appears that Elizabeth Deslandes' sister Miriam tore out the last few pages. Source of title - supplied title Accompanying material - Biographical notes supplied by donor in backfile Elizabeth Caroline Deslandes was born in Shanghai China, 22 July 1876. Her parents were Elias John and Julia (Ashton) Deslandes. Her father was an opium expert and master mariner and after his term in China the family returned to St Heliers in Jersey. He died there in 1887 and Julia remarried Richard Salmon Skelhorn in 1889. The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1892 on board the `Arawa' which left Albert Docks in London on the 7 July 1892, arriving in Wellington on the 26 August 1892. Description: Volume records Lingard-Monk's voyage around the world with his second wife Ellen Heburn. The couple visited Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and North America during the documented period of 8 November 1894 and 11 May 1895. Vessels travelled on include the P&O SS 'Himalaya' from Tilbury to Sydney, 'Waihora' from Melbourne to Auckland, and the 'Arawa' from Auckland to Honolulu via Apia. The narrative details shipboard activities, the daily life on board ship, weather patterns, and the progress of the vessel in detail. Includes a preface, and annotated chapter headings and corrections in pencil. Places visited in New Zealand include Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua, Taupō, and Auckland. Laid in at the front of the volume are two certified copies of marriage registry entries for Lingard-Monk from his marriages to Diana Caroline Walpole on 18 April 1876 and Ellen Heburn on 23 October 1894, prepared by the General Register Office, London, 1981 and 1982.
