Harrop, Angus John Neville, 1900-1963

Journalist and historian who served as agent in the United Kingdom for the University of New Zealand, 1931-1943 and agent for Canterbury University, 1931-1950. Born in Hokitika, went to school in Hokitika and Waitaki B H S, where he was Dux in 1918. Worked as a part time journalist at the Christchurch Press from 1921 while he was at Canterbury University College. Left New Zealand for England in 1923. Held degrees of M.A., D.Litt. from Canterbury University College, and Ph D from Caius College, Cambridge, England. He was the author of many books on New Zealand, but was best known by New Zealanders in England for the `New Zealand news'. He founded this paper in 1927. (see An Encyclopaedia of NZ Vol 1, p 602)

Angus John Harrop was born in Hokitika in 1900 and was educated at Hokitika, Waitaki Boys' High School, Canterbury University College and Cambridge, where he gained a LittD and PhD. He commenced his journalistic career on `The Press', served on the literary staffs of the `London Daily Mail' and the`Sunday Dispatch' and from 1941 to 1953 was the news editor of the Sydney Daily Mirror's London service. He was agent in England for the University of New Zealand from 1931-1943 and for Canterbury University College 1931-1950. In 1927 he founded the `New Zealand News', a fortnightly newspaper published in London for New Zealanders in Britain and remained its editor until 1960. He was helped in this venture by his wife Hilda (nee Valentine). He was author of several books on New Zealand and contributor to the `Cambridge History of the British Empire'. Harrop died in 1963. Description: Digital print copy of an unused cover design for a book by A J Harrop. The front cover shows red masks of a tattooed Maori and a European soldier in a helmet, tied together with red ribbon, and superimposed on an image of a group of Maori dancing performing a "Hauhau ritual dance" (so titled on another version by the same artist, that eventually used for the book cover) around a flagpole flying three flags: one rectangular and two pennant-shaped. The left side of the large rectangular flag is coloured red. The spine design shows the European mask placed above the Maori mask. The original ink drawing of the version that was eventually used for the book cover is housed at A-164-023. Central image is derived from an engraving of a watercolour in the Turnbull collection by Herbert Meade 'Pai Marire karakia held by the Te Hau fanatics at Tataroa .
