Writer of novels, television scripts and childrens' literature. Born Whakatane, brought up in Henderson. Lived in Auckland and Wellington, currently resident in Nelson. Married to Margareta Gee with whom he has two daughers Emily Gee and Abgail Gee. Has son Nigel Gee with previous partner Hera Margaret Raeha Smith. Became a writer during the 1950s and worked full time as one from 1975. Trained and worked as teacher and librarian between 1954 and 1975. Winner of numerous awards including three New Zealand Book Awards, two Esther Glen Awards, the Deutz Medal for Ficton, the Montana Award for Ficton 2006. In 2003 Gee was among ten of New Zealand's greatest living artists named as Arts Foundation of New Zealand Icon Artists.
