Wairarapa (Ship : 1882-1894)

Steel screw steamship of 1786 tons, built in 1882 at Dumbarton by W Denny Brothers for the Union Steam Ship Co. On 29 October 1894 she was wrecked one mile east of Miners Head, Great Barrier Island on a passage from Sydney to Auckland with the loss of 121 lives. Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: The journal contains an account of McNab's journey with observations on the places he visited. Includes mention of McNab completing the census aboard the SS `Taiaroa' on the night of 28 Mar 1886. Variations in title - Spine title `Travels in New Zealand' Relationship complexity - Also transcript styled as "Travels in New Zealand" (MS-Papers-6235-3) and microfilm (Micro-MS-0930) In Feb 1886 McNab left his home in Timaru for a tour of the North Island. He travelled by train to Christchurch, by steamer to Wellington and from there by another steamer to Napier. From here he travelled to Taupo via Tauranga by coach and toured the adjacent thermal areas and visited the Pink and White Terraces. Back in Tauranga McNab proceeded by steamer to Auckland from where he took another steamer to New Plymouth. From there he travelled by train to Wanganui and then on to Palmerston North from where he proceeded by coach to Masterton. Arriving in Wellington by train McNab sailed by steamer to Lyttelton and returned home to Timaru by train. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Shows the ship sailing on a fairly rough, green sea, close to land. Other boats appear in the distance. A number of passengers can be seen on deck, and the ship appears to be travelling at speed, its funnel smoking.
