Reference: A-128-029-1/2

Description: Monotone watercolour copies of the oil paintings done by James Barry in 1818, of Tuai and Titeri. Robley's handwritten notes indicate that the oil paintings were formerly with the Church Missionary Society, but had been applied for and obtained for New Zealand, by Mr T E Donne a government agent. Another hand (Donne's) has written that the CMS accepted his suggestion that the painting of Hongi, Waikato and Rev Kendall should go to New Zealand, and they also added the portraits of Tui and Tetere [sic]. Other Titles - Tuai and Titeri Quantity: 2 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil and monotone wash drawings on sheets approximately 140 x 105 mm, stuck to sheet 205 x 318 mm, which in turn is stuck to lined paper, 320 x 203 mm.

Description: Shows a rare early view of the ill-fated whaling station known as Hardwicke, in Port Ross on Auckland Island. The settlement is quite in the distance, but its buildings can be made out, as can three ships in the harbour. The hills and coastline are most predominant in the painting, as are the black and white sea birds in the foreground, which are either flying low over the water or drying their wings on the rocks Accompanied by a photocopy from the back of the painting of a signed certification by the artist's great-granddaughter, Madeleine McClintock (nee Oliver); dated 24 August 1983 (B-195-003-1) Other Titles - Ships anchored off the settlement at Port Ross, Auckland Islands [former title] Inscriptions: Verso - centre right - Port Ross Auckland Islands Dec 1st / 5[0] [in ink] Governor Grey visited the settlement aboard the HMS Fly, of which Oliver was the Commander, from 28 November to 5 December 1850. D. S. fl 1840s-1850s :[Soldier asleep in a whare, being watched over by a Maori woman. ...

Date: 1845 - 1858

By: Merrett, Joseph Jenner, 1815-1854; Wynyard, Robert Henry (Sir), 1802-1864; Groshinski, Brian Peter, 1944-

Reference: A-113-034

Description: A young bare-footed soldier asleep on a pile of blankets, his rifle propped against the wall behind him. A young Maori woman is seated on the floor beside him, watching him affectionately as he sleeps. A woven kete (kit) is hanging on the wall and there is an open door to the right with a sunrise or sunset showing above distant hills. An open case stands in the doorway. The soldier is wearing a short blue coat, striped shirt and white trousers. The woman has one shoulder bare and is wrapped in a flax cloak with a black fringe and black tassles. Has previously been attributed to Joseph Jenner Merrett and the woman is somewhat in his style; however it does not appear to be his work. As the former property of artist and soldier R. H. Wynyard, it is very likely to be associated with the 58th Regiment, of which Wynyard was in charge in New Zealand from 1845. He was acting-Governor of New Zealand (based in Auckland) 1853-1855 and was Superintendant of Auckland. He left Auckland (and New Zealand) in 1859. The scene is likely to be Northland, in which case it will date from 1845 or 1846; or Auckland, in which case it could date from 1846 to 1859. The only fellow-officer from the 58th Regiment with initials that match "D. S." is William Davies Shipley, who joined the army in 1848 as an Ensign, became a Lieutenant in 1849, joined the 58th Regiment in the mid 1850s and became a Captain in 1858. There is no evidence that he had any artistic ability, however. He made a career of the army, rising to Lieut-Colonel by the 1880s and retiring about 1887. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - D S (in faint blue upper case letters) Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 151 x 202 mm Provenance: Originally belonged to Robert Henry Wynyard, who was in New Zealand 1845-1846 and 1847 to 1858. Passed by descent to the Wynyard family of Auckland and sold to art dealer Brian Groshinski then of Wellington, in the early 1970s.

Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889 :Te Rehe, Maori chief at Akaroa. [ca 1850].

Date: 1848 - 1850

By: Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889; McClintock, Madeleine, active 1985; Groshinski, Brian Peter, 1944-

Reference: B-089-009

Description: Shows a bearded Maori man wearing a feather cloak and leaning forward slightly on a taiaha he is holding. Title from letter of authentication on backing board (accompanies painting in same folder) Name of chief formerly transcribed as Te Peke. Te Rehe was Rangatira of Te Wai a te Rua Ti Pa, at the mouth of the Opihi River, near Temuka, South Canterbury, but (if the word Akaroa has been correctly deciphered on this work) he must have visited Akaroa at the time Oliver was there. Te Rehe is mentioned as one of a group involved in an altercation during a journey between the spit of Lake Ellesmere (Kaitorete) and Taumutu, when he was accompanying a contingent of Kaiapoi chiefs (See "Akaroa and Banks Peninsula" (1940), page 31-32). Other Titles - Te Peke Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Te Rehe; Recto - bottom right - [Akaroa??]; Backing board recto - centre - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 320 x 235 mm (sight) Provenance: Previously owned by the artist's descendent Mrs Madeleine McClintock and sold to Brian Groshinski. Sold at McArthur's auction in 1984 to Goodman Fielder.

Alexander, James Edward (Sir) 1803-1885 :Proposed Maori Rangers / J. E. Alexander, Col....

Date: 1861

By: Alexander, James Edward (Sir), 1803-1885; Groshinski, Brian Peter, 1944-

Reference: A-113-033

Description: Two men, one seated, one standing, clad in Zouave-style (North African) uniforms with blue fez with a red tassle, short red collarless jackets, blue shirts and baggy blue knickerbockers, brown stockings and ankle-length boots. The seated man on the left, holding a taiaha, is on a slab of stone, with two palm trees behind him, possibly intended to be nikau. The standing man is holding a rifle. On the right is a toitoi in flower. There is a bay and low hills beyond the two men, probably Auckland Harbour with Rangitoto Island in the background. The type of uniform shown was never adopted for Maori soldiers The artist partook in the Waikato and Taranaki campaigns of the New Zealand Wars, 1860-1863. He wrote two books about the wars in New Zealand and in his "Bush Fighting. Illustrated by Remarkable Actions and Incidents of the Maori War in New Zealand" (London, 1873), Chapter 1, he makes suggestions about the ideal uniforms for bush fighters; he also (p. 14) mentions that "[Maori] look best in their native attire. I tried to introduce for the men the kilt and knickerbockers, instead of trousers, where I was stationed. Of course I did not venture to suggest changes in the ladies' costumes." Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour and sepia wash over pencil 162 x 247 mm Provenance: Probably purchased in London in the 1930s by the Pyecroft family, of Auckland. Sold in the early 1970s to art dealer Brian Groshinski, then of Wellington, and later of Auckland and Melbourne.

Description: A view from the sea, showing a three-masted barque, possibly intended to represent the Tory, in the left foreground. The Sugar Loaf Islands and volcanic peak Paritutu in right foreground. Mount Egmont and foothills in the background. Mount Egmont or Taranaki is represented rather more accurately in this view, than in Heaphy's Mount Egmont from the Southward, where its cone is depicted with too great a perfection. Possibly an imaginative reconstruction by the artist of his voyage aboard the Tory past Mt Taranaki in 1839 or 1840. Other Titles - Taranaki Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C. HEAPHY 1849 [in ink]; Recto - beneath image - title Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
