Description: The cuttings are from New Zealand newspapers, including the New Zealand Herald, The Christchurch Press, the Lyttelton Times and Auckland Star. They are mainly concerned with with Gordon's arrival and swearing in as Governor of New Zealand on 24 Nov 1880, and his initial tour of the country. The cuttings include editorials, letters to the editor and miscellaneous articles relating to the government and the Maori Question. Also includes reports on Samoan matters and on the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Source of title - Supplied by Library Gordon was sworn in as Governor of New Zealand on 24 Nov 1880. Both New Zealanders and officials in the Pacific expressed concern in the press that his concurrent duties as Governor and as High Commissioner for the Western Pacific could be satisfactorally carried out at the same time. The concern was shared by the British Colonial Office where the Secretary of State suggested in May 1881 that Gordon should relinquish the High Commission.
