Description: This interview is in 2 parts - the first is a recorded piece from a speech given by Marj Browne in 1997 - the second part is an interview made in Hamilton. Marjorie Edna Browne recalls being at school at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. Recalls being a Sunday School teacher, and beginning to grapple with the revolutionary nature of Christ's teaching in relation to social issues. Explains how the immediate family never fully recovered from father's experience during World War I. Backgrounds involvement with Pacificism. Describes how the church became divided as World War II progressed and the Methodist Bible Class Movement became a significant pacifist pressure group. Explains that in 1936 the CPS (Christian Pacifist Society) had been formed with a membership of 144, mainly Methodist. Refers to the leadership skills of Rev Ormond Burton and Arch Barrington who was secretary of the Bible Class Movement. Recalls that by 1939, with the outbreak of war, membership had grown to 428. Mentions Rev Allan Brash, a Presbyterian who became secretary of the World Council of Churches. Also refers to Archdeacon Young, an Anglican. Discusses prison and detention camp conditions for conscientious objectors and the tough struggle of their wives and children to survive. Talks about the Manpower Act. Describes Waikune prison situated just out of the National Park, with reference to superintendent, Jeremiah Quill. Recalls: interest in international affairs and reading the New Statesman from age 15; attending Institute of Technology in Dundee to study pharmacy; involvement with pacifism and signing the Peace Pledge ca 1937, with reference to Canon Dick Shepherd of St Martins in the Fields. Came to New Zealand 1939, working in Boots (Chemists) until war was declared in September. Describes being called up to be sergeant dispenser at Ngaruawahia and on refusing being sentenced to defaulter detention camp, spending the war years in a number of camps plus two mainstream prisons for `non cooperation' in defaulters camps - Notes that these defaulter camps were set up by Walter Nash. Describes the clandestine mail run between Rangipo prison and Hautu detention camp. Recalls meeting Ormond Burton whom he describes. Description: Jack Willetts recalls being a convinced pacifist by the age of 15. Discusses involvement with the Methodist bible class movement and refers to bible class leader who was strongly influenced by Ormond Burton, a methodist minister who had been decorated in the first world war for bravery, but came out convinced that the new testament was clearly pacifist in its teaching so he founded the New Zealand Christian Pacifist Movement. Recalls joining the movement at the age of 18 and attending NZ Christian Pacifist conferences. Mentions family attitude. Describes the tribunal set up for conscientious objectors during World War II. Refers to street meetings and `soapbox'. Outlines war years spent in various prisons and detention camps - Mt Crawford, Mt Eden, Strathmore, Hautu, Whitanui and the `birdcage' at Trentham. Description: David William Silvester born Frankton, Hamilton and lived there until the age of 20 years. Recalls memories of soldiers with wounds, crutches etc in Frankton after World War I, and peace celebrations in Hamilton including a ceremony and tree planting at school for a teacher who was killed in the war. Backgrounds involvement with Pacificism, with reference to youth director of Methodist church, bible class and attendance at conference in 1933 which led to becoming one of the first members of New Zealand Pacifist Society (1935/1936) and involvement with the Christian Pacifist Movement. Discusses: outbreak of World War II: interview with Public Service Commission Office; street meetings and soapbox once a week and sentence to Mt Crawford prison with Ormond Burton and Archie Barrington. Describes conditions at Mt Crawford and notes prisons were not fitted to take conscientious objectors, hence the commencement of detention camps. Refers to CO (conscientious objector) at Strathmore hospital who died from meningitis as it wasn't diagnosed. Recalls being sent to Waikune, with reference to Jeremiah Quill and then to Hautu. Description: Neil Gibson Smith born Manaia, Taranaki 1921. Describes family background and various influences on his thinking - father, James Douglas Smith, was a Presbyterian Minister, hence family move to Dunedin 1927 and in 1938 to Mt Eden, Auckland. Recalls father being a strong supporter of the Labour Party and refers to influence of Dr Rutherford Wadell. Recalls family and social life being centred on the church and Christianity being the basis for morality, justice tempered by love and charity, and life a matter of service to glorify God and do his work - these were the values and philosophies family lived by. Recalls being at University in Auckland when World War II broke out and describes his feelings about this event, the tensions and conflicts involved in reconciling the social gospel of his background, with taking part in modern war. Recalls beginning to question the christianity of his upbringing. Talks about peers who were more actively concerned with political issues and the challenges of socialism and communism. Refers to the influence of history lecturer, Willis Airey, a committed socialist. Became active in the Christian Pacifist Society which was centred on the strongly pacifist, Rev. Ormond Burton. Recalls studying the efficacy on non-violent resistance and talks about the value of a minority standing out and keeping alive the idea of an alternative to military force. Recalls being called for service and refusing to take the oath of allegiance. Describes his appeal in some length, attitudes of Appeal Board, being sentenced by Magistrates' Court to detention as a military defaulter and in March/April 1942 being sent to Strathmore Camp. Mentions his father's toleration and support. Describes briefly the work of the various camps. Recalls realising how sheltered life had been and explains how gradually and through a difficult process his philosophy changed from christian pacifist to humanist / agnostic and notes that rejection of the christian dogma did not mean the collapse of his values and moral life. Describes life after release in 1946 which included work on a poultry farm in Mt Roskill, Auckland, farm work, travel overseas in 1950, further education and career in social work.
