Powles, Guy Richardson (Sir), 1905-1994

Soldier, lawyer, diplomat and ombudsman. Born Otaki; served in World War II; High Commissioner to Western Samoa, 1949-1960; High Commissioner to India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Ambassador to Nepal, 1960-1962; Ombudsman and Chief Ombudsman, 1966-1977; Race Relations Conciliator, 1970-1972; Patron of Amnesty International and helped establish Coalition for Open Government. Knighted in 1961 and received Order of New Zealand in 1990. Survived by his wife Lady Eileen Powles; sons Michael and [Charles] Guy Powles. [Obit. Press 25 Oct 1994]. Grandson of Charles Plummer Powles (1839-1923), and son of Colonel Charles Guy Powles (1872-1951)
