Ronaldson, W (Rev), 1823-1917

Church Missionary Society missionary. Son of J J Ronaldson of London. Arrived in New Zealand in 1844 and became schoolmaster of the Church of England school at Putuki Maori pā, at Wanganui. He returned to England in 1849 to train as a missionary and returned to New Zealand in 1855. His first postings were in the Wairarapa. Later he was transferred to Motueka. In 1871 he was appointed to the church at Picton, in 1877 to St Johns, Milton, and in 1880 to St Peters, Caversham, where he concluded his active ministry in 1882.

Description: The papers largely consist of correspondence spanning four decades between Jane Oates and her sister, Margaret Morten, who lived in Derbyshire, England, but include letters written by Samuel, John Morten (husband of Margaret), various children of the Oates and Morten families, and by various other family friends and relatives. Letters give details about family matters, the concerns of stock and crop farming, adverse weather conditions, etc both in New Zealand and rural England. Description: The memorandum book describes Ronaldson himself, instructions on how to conduct yourself on board ship and what appear to be exercises on aspects of practising religion, and other matters. The diary begins 26 August 1845 until 12 May 1850 when Ronaldson sighted the Isle of Wight on his voyage to England and includes much material on Wanganui Maori as well as descriptions of shipboard life between New Zealand and Australia on the Sisters (1849), and from Sydney to London on the Kate (1850). Description: Collection consists of journals which record Ronaldson's daily activities on the journey to New Zealand in 1844, as well as his activities in the missionary field, his contact with the Taylor family and other Wanganui residents and his contact with the local Maori community. Also included is an autograph book kept at the CMS Training Institute, his letter book for the period 1844-1849 and two photographs of Ronaldson. Ronaldson travelled to New Zealand on board the Sydney arriving in in 1844. He moved to Wanganui and took up teaching at the native school under the direction of Rev Richard Taylor. In 1849 he returned to England to enter the Church Missionary Society Training Institute at Islington where he was ordained. He returned to New Zealand and was stationed principally in the Wairarapa.
