Description: The collection comprises diaries, an account by Brickell of the Greek Campaign and his experience as a POW based on these diaries, military documents and memorabilia and copies of two letters written by Stephen Weir, recounting the activities of the 6th Field Regiment during the 1st and 2nd Libyan Campaigns in 1941 and 1942. Brickell served as a Captain in the 6th Field Regiment, New Zealand Artillery and he was captured by German forces at Kalamata during the Allied retreat in Greece in 1941. He was imprisoned initially at Corinth, Greece and then spent the remainder of the war in Germany at Oflag VB, Biberach, Oflag VIB, Warburg and Oflag VIIB, Eichstatt. Jones appears to have got hold of captured film as some 1941 images from Bardia show NZ/British prisoners under German guard as well as Panzers. Other images from Tunisia and Bardia show German graves, a German half track captured by 28th Maori Battalion, a shot down German plane and pilot and also Jones and his battery. Description: Collection comprises letters from Dickens home to his wife, Helen while he was on active service during World War Two. Correspondence covers the period Oct 1940-May 1943, and details his military training in New Zealand, a period of service with the Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment at the Seuz Canal, and then finally his service with the New Zealand Artillery, 6th Field Regiment during the North African Campaign. The last major action he took part in was the attack on the summit of Takrouna in Tunisia in April 1943 and he was killed by a Stuka dive bomber on 4 May 1943 while writing a letter home at the regiment's camp. Description: Contains pay books and military ephemera relating to Gerald Weir's service in World War 1, 1914-1920, including Samoa, France and England. Also letters written to him by his brother, Major-General Steven Weir during World War Two that contain an account of his activities while on active service with the 2nd NZEF. Gerald (Sandy) Weir was the brother of Major-General Stephen Weir. At the beginning of World War Two Stephen Weir took command of the 6th Field Regiment, New Zealand Artillery, 2nd NZEF and led it during the Greek and North African campaigns. In December 194l he was appointed commander of Royal New Zealand Artillery. In mid June 1944 during the Italian Campaign Weir was appointed artillery commander for 10 Corps and in November 1944 he was appointed commander of the British 46th Infantry Division which he led for the remainder of the war.
