CMS (Church Missionary Society) missionary in New Zealand 1829-1884. Married Charlotte Arnett (1795?-1855); Christina Crombie Grant Johnston. Arrived 1829. At CMS station at Matamata 1835-1836. The family settled at Te Papa (Tauranga) where Brown purchased 1,333 acres for the CMS 1839. Became minister of Tauranga district 19 Dec 1842 and archdeacon of Tauranga 31 Dec 1843. In 1864 Imperial troops camped at the mission and Brown ministered to the wounded and dead. Despite his attempts to impartiality, he lost the trust of the local Maori. Walked for four months per year around the Bay of Plenty and Waikato to preach. Died at Tauranga. DNZB (Vol 1, 1769-1869, p43, B35))

Description: Gisborne and Petre went by sea to Coromandel and then by land, first up to Thames and travelling up the river, passing through pa, including Opita, then to Matamata, Tauranga, Rotorua, Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana. They returned to Auckland by way of the Waikato River, passing through Maungatautari and Waipa. The journal includes interesting descriptions of Maori life and Gisborne meet the Revs Brown, Spencer, Chapman and Ashville [sic] and various prominent Maori. Description: The journal begins in March 1858 and ends in November 1858. A note, 24 years later, describes her revisit to Kohanga and gives a brief historical summary. The journal describes life in Auckland, a voyage to Tauranga on the cutter `Hope', and visits to mission stations there and at Maketu, a trip through the thermal area and back to Auckland through Thames, the Waikato and Taupiri. Eliza Jones describes Maori life and conditions, flora and fauna as well as many of the people she met on her journey, including Archeacon Brown, Rev Volkner, John Kinder and Thomas Chapman, whose poem `The rats' lament', about the Maketu rats, is given in full. Description: Collection comprising copies of extracts from two original letters written by Wiremu Tāmihana Tarapīpipi Te Waharoa (William Thompson), and two undated translations of the letters into English. Both te reo transcriptions are signed "True Copies, E Shortland", and written on paper watermarked '1858': - Letter to Paraone Minita, Minister Browne, probably Alfred Nesbit Brown Church Missionary Society Archdeacon of Tauranga. Discusses “Ringaringa” or Ringatū in Tauranga. Dated 1 August 1863. - Letter to an unidentified person. The original letter held at Auckland City Libraries identifies the recipient as Ruia Paranihi. Discusses Tāmihana’s letter to Brown. Dated “Ākuhata 22 1863” (22 August 1862). The English translations are written in ink on lined paper. Description: Printed broadside with inscriptions and annotations addressed to Archdeacon Alfred Nesbit Brown, Tauranga. The broadside has been printed in Sydney by James Fedarb, likely ordered by James Busby for his store in the Bay of Islands during one of his visits to Sydney. The header reads "Victoria Store, Victoria, Bay of Islands"; the body of the broadside lists stock for sale at the Victoria Store, including food, beverages, tobacco, hardware, and kitchenware; and the foot of the text reads "James Fedarb, Agent". Above the header is the annotation "Mr Busby..." [sic]. The broadside is annotated verso in two different hands; one reads "Store at Bay of Islands" in pencil, and the other reads "Rev. A N. Brown | Tauranga" in ink. Information on custodial history taken from auction house catalogue. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
