Description: Samuel Jackson grew up in the village of Shirley, Derbyshire. His was a labouring family with a small farm. He moved to Manchester, married Maria Amelia Griffiths and immigrated to New Zealand in 1858 on the `Oliver Lang'. They initially lived with Samuel's brother Henry before moving to Greytown. Samuel served in the volunteers in the New Zealand wars. He worked as a farrier and later a veterinary surgeon. An addiction to alcohol led to family problems and a period in prison. Description: Papers include correspondence, mainly to Jackson from members of his family and friends, some official correspondence relating to his naval career; also includes a Jackson family tree and genealogical notes, including correspondence relating to Jackson family history (1976, 1982) Source of title - Supplied Jackson joined the Indian Navy at the age of 15 and did survey work while in the Navy. He came to New Zealand in 1862 on a two year furlough, and during his absence the Indian Navy was abolished. Deciding then to remain in the Colony, her entered the Survey Department of the Wellington Provincial District rising to become Chief Surveyor. Contains details of farming, trading and community activities and describes other Banks Peninsula and Wellington families. Also contains an account of journey from Lowry Bay via Wanganui to New Plymouth, Feb 1843 for trading reasons and up the Wairarapa coast in search of pastoral land.
