West Indies and New Zealand album

Date: [Circa 1870s to 1890s]

By: Burton Brothers (Dunedin, N.Z.); Bourne and Shepherd (Firm)

Reference: PA1-q-265

Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal". Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Physical Description: Album with dark blue cover, black corners and spine, entitled "L.H.[?]. West Indies and New Zealand"; 37.5 x 27.5 cm

Morris, J R album

Date: [Circa 1880s-1900s]

By: Morris, John Richard, 1854-1919; Ferrez, Marc, 1843-1923

Reference: PA1-f-038

Description: Scenic photographs, chiefly of South Island lakes and mountains, taken by John Richard Morris (Jnr); and three photographs of Rio de Janiero taken by Brazilian photographer Marc Ferrez. Photographs by J R Morris include two of seabirds, both of which show snare's crested penguins, one showing a variety of seabirds, stated to be at the Bounty Islands. However there is a loose leaf inserted at page 41, which says the caption is incorrect "Not Bounty islands - no vegetation. Info: Duncan Cunningham, Dept. of Conservation, 11/6/92". Most of the images by Morris are purely landscapes, but there is one view of a large group of children paddling at St Clair Beach, Dunedin; one of a young man standing in front of Beech Hut, with Mount Balloon in the background; one of a man standing by a dinghy with a sail at Boat Cove, Lake Te Anau; one of a man standing beneath Hawke's Crag in the Buller Gorge; and one of Fern Arch in the Buller Gorge. The three views by Marc Ferrez are entitled "Pont de Sylvestre" (the Viaduto do Silvestre da Estrada de Ferro do Corcovado) leading up to Mount Corcovado; "Sommet de Corcovado", "Promenade de l'aqueduc". Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Physical Description: Album with black cover; 31.5 x 44.5 cm
