Violinist, composer, conductor. He was born in Australia but moved to New Zealand with his family in 1872. Studied violin and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1887-1891. Photograph of him as a very young man in PAColl-0376. Photograph of Mr & Mrs Hill published in NZ Free Lance, 11 Jun 1952. He died in Sydney on October 30, 1960.

There is also a photograph of a large military camp at Island Bay with rows of tents and men and armaments in formation. In the foreground is a horse-drawn omnibus. Photographer(s) unidentified. Description: Papers relating to Maori music and waiata. Includes the script for a radio programme about Maori music by Phyllis Williams (Kirimamae), called "Maori Song Forms" on the scripts. Many of the waiata featured in the programme relate to Ngati Porou, and people mentioned in the programme include Sir Apirana Ngata, Ngaropi White, Materoa [Reedy], Hera Haereroa, Enoka Te Pakaru, Hiria Tamati, Matekino Brown, Alfred Hill and Tuta Nihoniho. Also mentioned is the story of Pou (Pourangahua) and the origins of the haka associated with Te Rauparaha "Ka mate, ka mate" are discussed saying it has connections to the story of Maui capturing the sun. Different kinds of waiata or song forms are discussed as well as titi torea, or Maori stick games. Also includes lyrics and translations of many Maori waiata, a booklet of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, translated into Maori, with notation, and a programme for the 123rd Waitangi Day Celebration, at Waitangi on 6 Feb 1963. Description: Shows Wellington Savage Club members dressed in cloaks and grass skirts, assembled on beach with Chief Savage (Professor Thomas Hill Easterfield) making a speech. Macbeth may appear as artist at left, with the Club treasurer (George Toogood) to the right of him. One member reads "The king of the fortunate isles" (not listed in ATL pre-1984 catalogue, although William Pember Reeves wrote "The fortunate isles" in 1897). Other persons are not identified by name, but appear to be individual likenesses. Box in Manuscripts and Archive (85-027-4/07) contains envelope labelled as containing the key to this picture, but it is not in that envelope. A korero was the club's fortnightly meeting, culminating in an annual invitation korero at the Town Hall, where speeches and musical items took place. Description: A range of photographs taken in New Zealand between 1909-circa 1950s by unidentified photographers, including five taken in the Rotorua/Ohinemutu/Wairakei areas. Comprises: Five images taken in the Rotorua/Ohinemutu/Wairakei areas: one of a group, and Maori guide, by thermal pools taken circa 1942 by Moore and Thompson; one of a collection of Maori artifacts, particularly wood carvings, taken at Ohinemutu circa 1941; one labelled 'Cottage Camp Ohinemutu' taken circa 1920s; one photomechanical print of the Waimangu Geyser; one taken near the Prince of Wales' Feathers geyser at Wairakei Two of a traction engine and caravans, at Blands Wood, Peel Forest, near Geraldine, taken 1919 and 1920. One of composer Alfred Hill and a group of Maori children, taken circa 1950s. Occasion unidentified.
