From: Jones, Pei Te Hurinui, 1898-1976 : Papers

Reference: Series-1143

Description: The Maori story of creation as given in this series is based principally on priestly recitals from the Whare Wananga, the Sacred House of Learning, of the Tainui tribes of the West Coast of New Zealand. The book deals with the Maori account of creation, the evolution of all things he saw around him; the world of the stars; lectures on the life principle; the heavens and the world thereafter. It begins with information about the Whare Wananga and its sacred assembly and then it is divided into parts 1-3. This book is dedicated to the memory of Te Hurinui Te Wano. It was originally recorded in Maori then the task of translating it into English was undertaken. In order to achieve a proper sequence and to fill in some gaps in the Tainui lore, Pei grafted features from the Takitimu account of the East Coast tribes into his work Quantity: 19 folder(s).
