From: Blow, Eric Harold, 1908-1974: Collection relating to World War Two, study and rugby

By: Blow, Eric Harold, 1908-1974

Reference: A-481

Description: A German made Pelikan brand zeichenblock (drawing pad) with eight caricatures loose inside the cover, and a blank loose sheet. The drawings are mostly signed by Eric Blow. The drawings comprise: - A caricature in coloured pencils with caption “Pasquinade, Lawrence Wilson as Daisy Bell” and signed “Blow”. - Three ink drawings of soldiers in different poses (standing smoking, chopping wood, lying in bed with a pipe and reading) which are cut out to the shape of the image. They are all on the same paper, which has a green botanical design on the verso. - Detailed caricature in watercolour with inscriptions including “The Cardinal Duke of York” and “Des. Llewellyn. Wally Finlayson”. It is signed “Blow”. - Detailed caricature in watercolour of a bearded man operating a realistic puppet. The inscriptions read “Man of Destiny” and “GBS Tonguelashes. The English per medium of Michael Goodliffe as General Buonaparte” and it is signed “Blow”. - A pencil and ink drawing of two soldiers at a desk. - A comic drawing of a military man (who has hair and a uniform characteristic of Adolf Hitler) at a desk serving tea, with caption “By Raewyn Owen”. This drawing is on paper that looks fresher than the others, is in ballpoint pen and of a different, child-like style. The Pelikan logo on the drawing pad was used from 1937 to 2020. The images of the paintboxes on the inside cover could be from the 1960s. Several sheets have been ripped out from the pad, along the provided perforated lines. The drawing pad paper appears to be different from the paper used for the drawings. The date of these drawings are attributed from the possible date the drawing pad was produced. Pelikan sketchbooks were made by the Gunther Wagner company which used prisoners of war and forced labour during World War Two. See “The Concessions Of War: Pelikan, WWII, And The Untold Story” ‘The Pelikan's Perch’, 25 November 2022. https://thepelikansperch.com/2020/05/02/pelikan-concessions-of-war/ accessed 15 December 2022. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 8 original cartoon(s). 1 sketchbook(s). Physical Description: 1 sketchpad (30cm x 42cm) and 8 drawings of various sizes. Processing information: The 8 drawings and an unused but torn sheet of paper were originally inside the front cover of the drawing pad. They were removed for conservation reasons and are housed in this same box with the drawing pad.
