Description: Three men, labelled 'NZDF', 'Media Monopopolies' and 'Govt Spin' have chained a journalist. 'NZDF' says that NZ Journalism is in good hands while 'Media Monopolies' comments 'Fun, eh?' and 'Govt Spin' drinks a glass of wine. Accompanying note from cartoonist states: 'Has the New Zealand Defence Force has forgotten the values they should be protecting?' In July 2013 Jon Stephenson, an investigative journalist in Afghanistan, claimed that he was put under surveillance by the New Zealand Defence Forces, who classified him as a 'subversion ' threat after he reported unfavourably on the treament of prisoners by the Force. Neither the government nor much of the news media took his side in his subsequent defamation case. Description: Under the caption 'NZDF surveillance photo showing a typical editorial meeting of New Zealand journalists', Che Guevara, Mao Tse Tung, Karl Marx, Adolf Hitler, a 'gormless moron', a 'bitch from hell' and other sinister types are grouped. They are journalists as conceived by the New Zealand Defence Force. Accompanying note from cartoonist states: 'An odd time we live in when it needs to be stated that journalists are not the enemy of the NZ military. Who is the "subversive" party in all this? Who is subverting a society based on free speech?' In July 2013 a New Zealand journalist, Jon Stephenson, brought a defamation case against illegal surveillance by the New Zealand Defence Force who listed him as 'subversive' after he reported unfavourably on the treament of prisoners by the Force in Afghanistan. The Defence Force used the services of the United States National Security Agency for the spying. Refers to evidence which has emerged in the defamation case bought by freelance Journalist Jon Stephenson against the Chief of the Defence Force General Rhys Jones. Stephenson has had his movements and telephone calls monitored by the New Zealand Army. Former SAS Head Colonel Chris Parsons admitted that he had ordered his men to be on the lookout for Stephenson in Afghanistan in 2010.
