The two Ellice Island (now Tuvalu) men are probably based on drawings by Alfred Agate, from the United States Exploring Expedition, in 1841. The two Aurora (now Maewo) Islanders show a man, woman and child. The caption explains, in pencil 'clothing made from [the] bark of a tree'. The Raraka Islaner also wears tapa cloth.
