The images were taken in November 1955 during a visit with John Stitchbury to asses the suitability of the site for a visit by the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society. Includes views of locomotives, a jigger, the mill office, New Zealand Railways wagons loaded with timber, bridges, rock cuttings in the Mangakahu Stream valley, Goat Creek Viaduct, Mangatukutuku Viaduct, exchange sidings, and Waikoura Camp. Also included are digital scans of Mellor’s photographs and contextual information created by Richard Stratford in 2020. Description: Shows Minister for Railways Michael Moohan standing on rail tracks and gesturing to the Da1436 diesel electric locomotive stopped at Palmerston North railway station, on a return trip from Auckland to Wellington. Locomotive has sign on front 'Wellington Auckland Ministerial Train 11 1/2 hours 16-18 Feb 1960'. Refers to the record breaking Wellington to Auckland rail trips made by the 'Moohan Rocket' special ministerial train. Photograph taken for the Evening Post newspaper of Wellington by an unidentified staff photographer. On 16 February 1960 a special ministerial train made a record time trip from Wellington to Auckland in 11 hours and 45 minutes using two Dg class diesel electric locomotives. The return trip on 18 February 1960 was quicker at 11 hours and 34 minutes. It used a Da1436 diesel electric locomotive as far as Palmerston North where it was changed for the original Dg locomotives as the Da class locomotives were not permitted through the electrified tunnels between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay.
