Description: Pamphlet shows on its front panel a Tahitian woman dancing to the beat of a drum played by a man seated in the foreground. Other panels show photographs and illustrations of Samoa, Fiji and Tahiti, with text describing tourist activities on Tahiti. A stylised map shows the air route between the islands, and one panel shows the Solent flying boat used on the route. The front panel is bordered with frangipani flowers. Dated in the 1950s because the Solent flying boat service ended in 1960. One side displayed in "Island style: Dancing the Pacific". Description: Leslie Richard (Les) Adams talks about his RNZAF flight engineering work in the Pacific during World War II before joining Tasman Empire Airways Ltd (TEAL), as an airframe engineer, where he worked on flying boats. He discusses undertaking flying boat maintenance and annual overhauls before the Solent ceased flying for TEAL in 1960. Adams describes its gradual restoration, beginning in 1980. He also mentions tours of Solent at MOTAT. Description: Interview with Irene Kingwill (nee Zimmerman), born in Ngaruawahia in 1928. Outlines her family background, growing up in Ngaruawahia and Auckland, and attending Auckland Business College after she left school. Refers to working in various office jobs until she started in the booking office at Tasman Empire Airways Ltd (TEAL) in 1949. Refers to later working as a secretary in TEAL and then as an air hostess on Solent flying boats. Comments on the summer and winter uniforms, and spending three months as a ground hostess before flying. Mentions her introductory flight to Sydney in rough weather. Talks about rosters, flights to Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti, the accommodation crew stayed in, and the roles of stewards and hostesses on international flights. Refers to safety demonstrations given to passengers, life jackets and life rafts. Comments on the arrival of [Douglas] DC-6 aircraft, to replace the Solent flying boats, and the changes this brought for hostesses and stewards. Discusses going to England on a working holiday in 1955-1956, not being accepted back at TEAL as a hostess, but getting a job with them at Whenuapai Airport where she remained until 1959. Description: Interview with Mary Best (nee Clifton), born in Herne Bay in 1929. Outlines her family background, growing up at St Heliers Bay, schooling during World War II, and attending a business college to learn typing, shorthand and book keeping. Refers to working for a public relations company, a legal office, a grain importer and in other offices. Mentions crewing on a schooner and buying a sailing dinghy. Discusses going to work for TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Ltd) as an air stewardess when she was 21. Comments on her training before beginning flights as sole air stewardess, later being given emergency training, and the Pacific routes flown by the Solent flying boats. Talks about the second steward worked in the galley where meals were cooked, and tables being set with starched cloths. Mentions stop-overs in Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tahiti, hotels where the flight crew stayed, and bringing back flowers, vanilla beans and plant cuttings, and French perfume from Tahiti. Refers to wearing starched whte uniform dresses until after takeoff, then changing into a dress, and later being issued with a Christian Dior-designed uniform. Comments that many passengers were flying for the first time, and passengers wore their best clothes. Mentions children travelling unaccompanied. Refers to a woman dying during a flight, and a mercy flight to the Chatham Islands to pick up a baby (but not the mother). Mentions leaving TEAL, living in Sydney for a period where she married, and later working at Auckland Museum for eight years as an antiquities officer. Reflects on her feelings about her flying days.
