Below can be seen the houses and other buildings constructed for the sheep research station set up in 1973. Photographed by Evening Post staff photographer John Nicholson 21 February 1989. These excavations found evidence of settlement dating 400 years back, predating Ngati Toa's occupation in the 1800s.
