Description: Alpine, bush, valley and mountaineering images taken by various photographers in the South Island. While there is a typescript inventory, many of the sites are unidentified, including images numbered 1-7, 27-141. There are two major sequences, one taken by Edgar Richard Williams (signed ER) when on a trip up the Rakaia River with T.T. Gough in 1917 (information from internet) (image nos. 10-11, 14, 18-26). Some of these have notes on the back added by John Pascoe at a later date. The other main sequence shows an expedition to Mount La Perouse in 1932. This sequence was possibly taken by William D Frazer (from information on internet), although it is possible they were taken by Jack Mitchell (John Wesley Mitchell, Snr). The La Perouse expedition included mountaineers Tom Sheenan, Alex Graham, Marion Scott, Jack Mitchell, Louie Roberts (Mary Louise Roberts), and Anne Stevenson. Images numbered 6-7, show a large group of men, possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, or the New Zealand Alpine Club (either the Canterbury or the Otago branch). John Dobree Pascoe is visible standing in the middle row towards the right. Most or the men are seen in front of a mountain hut, while three men are perched on the roof. The last two images are sterescopes from an "Earthquake series" published by W.S. Smith, showing earthquake damage in San Francisco in 1906. They are No. 317 "Northeast from Fifth Street", and No. 318 "Portsmouth Square". Most of the places identified are listed above. Quantity: 150 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Alpine views in the South Island and two views of rock formations in the North Island taken by G E Mannering. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Photograph 24 is probably of the helichrysum species. Several views show close-ups of glaciers, including ice pinnacles on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 20); one of "hummocky ice" on the Godley Glacier (no. 37); Mannering's two young sons on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 38); broken ice on Franz Josef Glacier (no. 39); a sand cone on the Tasman Glacier, with four women and three men in the backgound (no. 43); and the terminal glacier face (Franz Josef?). From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers. Those named include Miss Marsden (no. 33), E.A. Fitzgerald, J.J. Kinsey, J. Lippe, A.S. Sutton-Turner, a member of Sun Newspapers Ltd (possibly McGregor?), R. Sanders and C. Beken. Two images of an unidentified mountain hut were taken by John Pascoe (in 1931) and Dorothy Pascoe (in 1944) showing the hut which had been in use since 1895, and was completely destroyed by erosion. There are early images (nos. 1-7, 20-22, and 41). No. 1. is a diorama of an ice cave in the Mueller Glacier; no. 2. shows three mountaineers (two older men greeting a younger man, two of whom are carrying ice picks, the man on the right possibly J.J. Kinsey); no. 3. is entitled ""In difficulties" Ollivier carrying Barrow as hor[ses in difficulties]" and no. 6. taken at the same time is entitled "Ollivier carrying Fitzgerald ashore. In difficulties in the Forks Stream", signed J.J. Kinsey and dated 13/7/[18]97 on the back. Nos. 4-5. were taken by E.A. Fitzgerald show Zurbriggen and Clark [i.e. Jack Clarke] on the summit of Haidinger, dated 14/7/[18]97 on the back. Image no. 20. shows five men holding ice-picks, standing in front of a stone wall with a tent behind at Separation Camp at the ehad of the Godley River; image no. 20 shows four men with heavily laden bicycles on a track with mountains behind. No. 41. shows two women wearing large hats sitting in the wire cage above the Hooker River (one possibly Freda Du Faur). One sequence shows aerial photographs of the Southern Alps, some of which were taken by a member of the Sun Newspapers. Another sequence (nos. 23-31) were taken by Arthur Seymout Sutton-Turner, many of which show the effects of storm clouds in the mountains. Image no. 33. (taken by Miss Marsden) shows the foot of the Unser Fritz Falls. Charles beken took images no. 36-40, showing The Minarets, serac on the Hochstetter Icefall, the bridge over the Tekapo River, and the Pukaki Bridge and lake with the accomodation house centre right. Image no. 34. (taken by R. Sanders) shows a disused logging railway with wooden sleepers, which leads into the mouth of a tunnel, surrounded by native bush. Image no. 42. was taken by W.A. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by Miss Joachim (nos. 1-19) and Miss Theomin (nos. 20-50). There are two North Island views taken by Miss Joachim (Papakura Geyser (no. 2), and Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua (no. 9)). Included in this box is a two-page letter to "Mr. Kennedy" signed by Dorothy Theomin. She starts off "I am always so very [proud when you think any of my films are worth turning into slides that I feel the "kindness" is all on your side for the honour you do me in using them...". She also refers to Peter Graham, Mr. Chas. Buchanan and a Mrs. Bickerton. There are also two pages, partially in Miss Theomin's hand-writing, describing a few of her images, though the numbering system in these notes, the pencilled numbers (possibly given by W. A.
