Outlines family background - both parents born Australia, coming to New Zealand, 1922, when father was transferred by Bergers Paints. Recalls education at Newtown parish school in Island Bay and Sacre Coeur, Island Bay for seven years as a boarder before entering the Little Company of Mary sisters, a nursing order. Refers to Flying Boat from Auckland to Australia. Describes the various stages of training and uniform [habit] worn and nursing training. Recalls returning to New Zealand 1953 working mostly in Operating Theatre in Wellington before going to Christchurch to do maternity at Calvary and midwifery at St Helens. Refers to the establishment of training school in Wellington and becoming Novice Mistress before being elected to be General Councillor in Rome. Backgrounds the decision have the LCM in Tonga and refers to Bishop Finau. Refers to Vatican II and changes in rules and habit (clothing worn). Recalls being involved in the establshment of Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington towards the end of the 1980s, being on the Board and involved with Pastoral care at the hospice. Notes that it was the first hospice in New Zealand. Discusses medication for patients in pain. Description: Sister Lusia Tupou born in Tonfa in village of Houma, on Tonga Tapu, 1946. Recalls family background, schooling run by SMSM sisters (Missionary sisters of the Society of Mary) and decision to come to New Zealand in 1966 and entering the convent of the Little Company of Mary (LCM) in 1968. Discusses the different stages of training including canonical year (spiritual year) and commencement of community nurse training, an eighteen months course. After final profession returned to Tonga 1974. Describes difficulties of setting up clinic and convent and opening of clinic in 1975. Recalls being the fourth congregation to open in Tonga but the only nursing one. Talks about the long hours, seeing 100, sometimes nearly 200 patients a day. Describes conditions in the homes in which babies were delivered. Recalls going to the Philippines in 1984 on a course and contacting Hepatitis.
