Description: Views around the Taupo Tongariro area, including Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Lake Taupo and Wairakei. There is one image of the Maori interior of Tom Ryan's whare, one of the Terraces Hotel at Lake Taupo, and others of various buildings at the Spa Hotel (Taupo), including the interior of the dining room. This building was the meeting house Te Tiki o Tamamutu, purchased by John Joshua (proprietor of the Spa Hotel) for use as a smoking room and dining room for the hotel guests. Several images show unidentified Maori women in posed groups, or working with flax, and in one case a woman using a treadle sewing machine. An unidentified man is seen, in several images, fishing at pools below the Aratiatia Rapids. Photographs taken by Auckland Star photographers around the turn of the 19th-20th century. Description: The diary kept during his two month sojourn at Hanmer Springs, where he was active in the local church and in organising war relief work such as the Belgium Fund Carnival. It contains a daily record of Cruttwell's activities while at the sanitorium, including the writing of sermons, theological reading, weather conditions, leisure activities, etc. He describes the local Maori and pakeha residents, the surrounding countryside, and gives reactions to war news received in some detail. Included are some newspaper clippings and photographs. A few pages describe his impressions of Christchurch. The diary appears to have been written for Cruttwell's fiancee back in England, and he also refers to having sent the previous diary back to her. Variations in title - On Title page: New Zealand (South Island) Edward Cruttwell was attending a theological college in England when his health broke down and he travelled to New Zealand to recuperate. He spent six months during 1914-1915 travelling in both the North and South Islands. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (70 leaves).
