Description: Printed by Geddis & Blomfield, 1901. The book is annotated and also includes some loose material that was laid in to the volume, including clippings (some annotated), research notes, drafts, drawings, correspondence, and photographic prints. The loose papers are dated circa 1930s-1940 and mostly relate to the Rotorua and Taupō regions. The correspondence includes one page of a letter from Alfred Warbrick, of Whakarewarewa, written 31 October 1933, relating to a 'stone image' [carving?] at Matuatonga which had previously been taken to Ohinemutu, but had since been returned to Matuatonga on Mokoia Island. The correspondence also includes a copy of a typewritten letter by [?] R. Mair which refers to an excerpt of a letter by Gilbert Mair, dated 27 July 1905, relating to Te Porere Pā (also included in this folder). The clippings include an article by James Cowan that was published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine, 1 June 1931 'Lakeland and Storyland: The charm of a Rotorua cruise'. The drawings comprise an ink drawing by Eileen Cowan of Ngauruhoe erupting, and another ink drawing (probably also by Eileen Cowan) of the Haere-huka Rapids, Waikato River. The photographs are of Gilbert Mair's grave, Mokoia Island, and a very small photograph of two people climbing Mount Ngauruhoe. The drafts include a translation of a waiata 'Tangi for Mokoia' which has an annotation which says that it was translated by "J. Cowan" in 1896. Quantity: 1 volume(s). 1 folder(s). It was wrecked at Matakaea and its kumara cargo became the Moeraki boulders. Kahukura - the story of his tricking the patupaiarehe while they were fishing Kuiarau - while bathing in a small lake at Rotorua she was taken by taniwha. Her husband Tamahika asked the gods to kill the taniwha, and they did so by boiling the lake waters. Kaiwhakaruaki - a man-eating taniwha who was killed by warriors near Parapara Golden Bay, after a fight during which he killed many of the warriors. Kua mau i te ao - the story of the naming of Mauao (Mount Maunganui), Puwhenua's mountain suitor who was caught (mau) by the light of day (ao). Description: Contains notes about places associated with Kupe in Wellington and Wairarapa, whakapapa, financial records by Tuta Nihoniho and miscellaneous notes about land management There is a lengthy account of the destruction of the Te Arawa canoe by Raumati, and subsequent events, and a related narrative about Raumati's son, Ngarue and his activites and family There are haka and waiata, a list of pa in Taranaki and related iwi, notes about the origins and settlements of various iwi, notes about greenstone, and a narrative about conflicts between Te Ati Awa and Waikato, and the subsequent migration of Te Ati Awa along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa to the Wellington area There are notes about the arrival of Pakeha in New Zealand before Captain Cook, and a note in Elsdon Best's hand that states that much of the information in the manuscript was extracted from the Journal of the Polynesian Society and other published sources Also contains the names of several muskets belonging to the Ngati Toa which were named in a waiata composed by the wife of Te Pukoro, a Ngati Tama/ Ati Awa chief killed in the Wairarapa in the late 1820s. Description: Tony Batley outlines his family history going back to 1863 when his grandfather joined the crew of the `Royal Bride` which sailed to New Zealand and anchored off the coast at Napier (Paytoney) where a local gale blew the vessel over. Local Maori formed a living chain and saved the crew - Grandfather was thirteen years old with no possessions. Was hired for a couple of years by Sir Donald McLean who had a sheep station at Marae Kakako. Evenually in 1882, after several jobs, grandfather returned to Moawhango and opened a store with his brother Thomas Snelling and in 1883 opened a post office. He acted as interpreter for the Maori Land Court held in Moawhango in 1894. Discusses his life in Taihape, apart from 4 years in the Airforce, which included a course in firearms in Levin and Ohakea camp before duty in the Solomon Islands, arriving in Guadacannal on his 21st birthday. Recalls the RNZ Airforce camp called `Bloody Knoll on Ridge' had been a scene of heavy fighting in 1942. Describes the tension. Refers to Ventura bombers, the S Brauning Machine guns and depth charges. Describes the impact of returning to Moawhango and the Taihape district and how it re-awakened his interest in the history of the area and in 1946 he began to abstract his grandfather's diaries and relates extracts from them. Describes many interests. He was on the Council of the Polynesian Society; was a Board Member of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust; Chairman of the Kaimanawa Kaueha Forest Park Advisory Committe; President of the New Zealand Archaeological Society and currently on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Regional Committee, Wanganui. Discusses the peopling of inland Patea by Tamtea and his descendants. Notes that Ngati Hotu were the original iwi. Discusses Winiata marae and the Moawhango and Orua Matua carved houses. Tells the story of Ngatarua and land given to Ngati Hinemanu.
