Description: Shows Alfred Stephens, Editor of the Sydney Bulletin, seated in his study at his desk at night, a gas lamp lit above him, books in a bookcase alongside him. He is gazing at his raised right hand, in which he holds a woman's garter. On the desk in front of him, lie a lock of hair tied with a bow, an envelope and a pen. The portrait is contained in a tondo shape and above it, float the faces of seven smiling women, while a sad-faced woman is below. To the left, a Cupid figure with quiver and arrows, is walking away, holding a candle and yawning. The drawing illustrated a poem by A. G. Stephens, 'Oblation' published in 1902. In it, Stephens refers to himself procrastinating while he daydreams. He mentions various women in the poem, including 'Yet ... I bethink me Winnie's wicked eye'; 'These notes for slashing leaders I should do / I'll tether them again in Amy's garter ... It was a trophy, keepsake, what you will'; 'Here in the drawer naughty Jenny's hair - how I remember the fond night I shore it' ; 'I often wish I'd cribbed a lock from each / As Schaunard in La Vie (sigh!) de Boheme ... But I was always careless ... Only that hat pin with the butterfly / Well it holds Clara's photo, in the rack / She's married now ...'; 'And here is Lucy's letter - little Jade' ; 'That's all ... no something rattles - Kitty's pen!' Bart recalls meeting partner, Sarah, in Queensland, coming to New Zealand 1973, living in Nelson for eight months, before moving to Great Barrier Island in 1974. Talks about pack horse as means of transport, boat service, building house, leisure time activity and methods of cooking and washing. Moved from Rosalie Bay to Tryphena to enable children to have schooling, with reference to Correspondence School. Backgrounds starting a building supply business and getting skyline garage franchise. Sarah talks about enjoying the alternative lifestyle, washing by hand, lamps which included tilly lamp, hurricane lamp and kerosene lamp and how each improvement was appreciated. Description: View of the wood-lined interior of a large house. A carpet strip runs along the centre of the hall, there are floral-covered ottomans and tall blue curtains on the right, pictures on the walls on both sides, other small items of furniture and an oil lamp hanging from the ceiling. "Mokoia" was the Lysaght family home from the late nineteenth century onwards. According to Mrs Josephine Forbes, a family member who spent much time at "Mokoia" in her youth, this painting hung in the hall it depicts. The view looks towards the main front door (at the far end). The door on the right led to a tiny courtyard. In the right distance is a marble table that stood in from of the window, with a Chinese umbrella stand beside it. The dining room was to the left, out of sight. The lamps ran on colza oil, made from rapeseed. The house had nine bedrooms and is no longer standing.
