Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Southern Alps towards the West Coast, taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann. The box is entitled "W.A. Kennedy. Dr. Teichelmann" (Box 24). The images are separated into seven sequences filed in paper folders. The folders are as follows: 1: Lake Mahinapua & Brunner (nos. 1-11). 2: About Hokitika (nos. 12-31). 3: From Halcombe Pk (nos. 32-48). 4: Waiho River Valley (nos. 49-65). 5: Franz Josef Terminal (nos. 66-77). 6: Franz Josef Glacier Valley (nos. 78-86). 7: Lake Kanieri (nos. 87-123). Image no. 24 has comment on the verso which reads "Dr. thinks it is the Buller Gorge, but I am inclined to Hokitika R. Gorge" [W A Kennedy]. Image no. 63 shows gold sluicing works covered with ice and icicles. Images 81 and 82 show ice seracs on the Franz Josef Glacier at the Almer Glacier junction. Image no. 90 shows an unidentified woman wearing a fur coat and a hat sitting in a boat on Lake Kaniere (photograph taken from Camp Bay, showing bush and mountains behind) Image no. 97 shows Dr Teichelmann's cottage at Hahn's Bay (Hans Bay), Lake Kaniere. Image no. 100 shows "the old hotel at Kaniere, since burned down" (note on image verso). Most of the places shown are listed above. Quantity: 124 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod. Description: Photographs taken by undentified photographers of the beginning of Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition. The album begins with scenes on board Nimrod while still in London, including several with Shackleton's wife Emily, and two young children, Raymond and Cecily (her name given as Cecilia in this album). From London scenes of shipboard life are shown, ships escorting Nimrod out of Lyttelton Harbour en route to Antarctica, with partial views of the Koonya which towed Nimrod to save fuel. Many of the members of Shackleton's party are clearly identified, as are places. Views show weather conditions (including blizzards and their effect), the landing party, the hut at Cape Royds (exterior and interior living conditions), seals, penguins, ponies and dogs, natural walls of "kenyte" rock formations, icebergs, and various forms of ice crystals, ice flowers, and ice stalactites.
