Description: Most of the New Zealand images relate to the Nelson family, their farms, farm houses, and farm buildings in the Pori area, north eastern Wairarapa, and scenic views of the area such as the Makuri River, a waterfall at Tiraumea, Annedale north of Tainui, the Pori Bridge, and native forest. The images of the farm houses include building a stable and buggy house, views of the yard with washing drying, a hen run, and a view of the dining room at "Ruatea". Four images are of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are three photographs of local Maori, one of bullock teams at Tiraumea, snow covered landscape at "Nga Mahanga", a picnic group with horses and buggys, and many views of the countryside from the Nelson farms showing cleared, partially cleared and forested land, much of it covered with the gaunt trunks of burnt off bush. There are group photographs of the families and friends. As well as the men these include women (wives?) Lucy, Katie, and Winifred, and children, Robert, Frances, and Dorothea. Other new Zealand houses include two probably located at Annedale with the names "Te Hoe" and "Manawa", and another in Featherston called "Newstead". Description: Most of the images relate to a survey team (or teams) operating in the hill country west of the main road between Raetihi and National Park, centred in the area around Ruatiti. The two names in the album for the area are the Ruatiti Block which includes the Ruatiti Stream and the Manganuioteao River, and the Riariaki Block and trig immediatly to the north. There are images of team members, camp life (ie storing food, cutting hair, living quarters, rod fishing, and swimming), groups out on the job (ie cutting trees, making survey pegs, moving through the bush with packs and equipment, on horse back, returning from the hunt, packing in supplies, making observations, and constructing the Maungaroa trig station), and views of the native forest, and rivers. Interspersed among these photographs are others which include social occasions such as farewelling a survey team member, a motoring trip associated with a large house called "Pihautea," an amateur instrumental group, a cricket game in Nelson, and a group in Albert park Auckland. Description: Double-page spread image shows at far left Herekiekie's waata (storehouse), and other buildings nearby. Two horses are in the centre foreground, and a few scattered figures. At the right is the waterfall at Turangerere on the Hautapu River, with the word "Tertiaries" written beside them. A fenced square enclosure is visible on the bank further up stream. Crawford writes: "At 2.20 pm, we reached the pretty village of Turangerere, the principal residence of the late chief Herekiekie, situated on the right bank of the Hautapu. Here there is a celebrated waata or storehouse, very large and highly ornamented with carvings. Description: Album of photographs compiled by Phyllis Long of her journey to New Zealand in 1923, time teaching at Nga Tawa School, and return to England in 1926. Also includes photographs likely taken in Kashmir in circa 1928-1930. Long is likely the photographer of most images, with other photographers unidentified. Some images have captions. Photographs of Long's trip to New Zealand on board the ship 'Tainui' include a commercial postcard of the ship and passengers waving from the deck as the ship leaves the wharf, Panama Canal (Culebra Cut, Gatun Lock, Mira Flores Lock, dredges, and a coaling station), Pitcairn Island, and Pitcairn Islanders approaching in a rowboat and selling local goods on board the ship. Further ship board scenes show deck sports (croquet, tennis), crossing the line ceremony (greasy pole, Father Neptune), unidentified people in deck chairs, and Phyllis Long with various children including Jo, Eileen, Audrey, and the Whiteside family. Nga Tawa photographs show the original school building (Wellington Diocesan School) with images of the entrance, a side view, and veranda. Also the swimming bath and interior images of the dining room and gym. Album also includes a photograph of the new school building, built after the 1924 fire. Students in school uniform are seen on excursions with Long such as having a picnic beside a river and in a copse of trees, wading in the water [Rangitikei River?], swimming, and on the poolside during swimming event. One poolside image shows a large monster costume. Teacher's accommodation where Long lived (a cottage on the school grounds) is shown with exterior and interior images and sometimes with teachers, including Long, in shot. Miss Else J. Rowe, Miss Halstead, Miss Cooper-Evans, and Frances McCall (the headmistress) are identified. Also images of their horses Ngaio, Kaiwarau, Pipette, and Petone. In one image McCall holds a puppy. Long and other teachers are also seen setting out for a picnic on horseback and swimming in a river under a railway bridge. Some group photographs show teachers and students. Other images show a pitched tent, boiling billies over a campfire, flooded farmland, an unidentified obelisk-shaped memorial, Long and an unidentified man standing on coastal rocks in Sydney, and a Rough Collie dog with a stick. Image of Long's return to England on board the ship 'Marama' in 1926 include unidentified people on deck and children in fancy dress. A series of images, likely of Kashmir, show river scenes (canoe with outrigger, [house boats?]), street scenes (pineapple stall, rickshaw, water buffalo pulling carts), children swimming, and houses. Description: The two Nelson farms in this album are "Nga Mahanga" (Hugh Nelson's place), and "Taumata" (Jack Nelson's place). Views show the farm houses, and farm buildings, the farm land and landscape of the Pori area partially cleared of bush. One group of images shows the countryside under snow. There are a series of five images recording the building of a stables and buggy house, also a view of the woolshed and sheep at "Taumata". Scenic views of the area include the Makuri River ford, native forest interiors with pongas, and native forest. Four images show the interior of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are two photographs of local Maori standing beside tents in a bush clearing, one of army volunteers in uniform standing in front of tents, two of soldiers at an unidentified event, many of horses, some of hens, dogs, cats, and cattle. Two prints show one of the Nelson brothers cutting long grass with a scythe and 4 others are views of an unidentified house and its garden at Tiraumea (a distant view of this house surrounded by pinus radiata shelter belts and its surrounding countryside can be seen in album PA1-o-1206, page 7 captioned "Tiraumea"). There are also some images of "Newstead" the Monckton family home at Featherston. There is only one photograph of a Nelson family group. The rest are individual images of adults and children which include: Frederick Monckton, Lucy Miller (who married Frank Nelson), Winifred, [Lornie?], Dorothea, [Frances?], the brothers and the children.
