Description: Photographs on album pages: photograph of Mount Peel Station, its interior and grounds including Mr Acland in his study, his daughters and their friends identified by inititals, including one of L D Acland and B B Acland, the latter knitting a sock, and the Church of the Holy Innocence viewed across a field of hay stacks with the forest planted by Acland behind it; more of the same women boating and picnicking, including a view of a gorge taken by Harriet Acland, a church interior and Bishop Harper playing cricket with a young boy; Ilam homestead covered in clematis with balconies and verandahs and extensive grounds next to the Avon River, and the Watts Russell family group at Pareora August 1894 with their dog and saddled horses in the background; the West Coast Times printing office with the men outside it, C G Tripp and family and a Centerbury view; and two views of Tripp's homestead at Orari. Panama-Pacific International Exposition album 1

Description: Volume 1 of a two volume record of New Zealand exhibits at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held at San Francisco in 1915. Most of the photographs were taken by Leslie Hinge. Photographs include exterior and interior views of the New Zealand pavilion, views from the pavilion by day and by night, and exterior views of pavilions from Australia, Cuba, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, France, Norway and Canada. Interior views in the New Zealand pavilions include a fernery; the reading room; exhibits of wool samples and woollen fabrics; a display of leather boots and saddlery; views of three different collections of kauri gum samples (belonging to J H McCarroll, Colonel G W S Patterson, and Arthur H Cranwell); a cabinet of stuffed kiwis; stuffed heads of a boar, a fallow deer and a red deer; and outdoor closeup views of Corriedale sheep, exhibited by C H Ensor. One photograph shows the United States Ex-President, William Howard Taft and his entourage visiting the New Zealand pavilion, and another shows a group of seven press delegates. Description: Colourful poster has a perpetual calendar in the centre, and is surrounded by advertisements for local businesses of Pukekohe, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Otahuhu and Papakura. Above the calendar panel is a circular head and shoulders portrait of a clean-shaven Maori chief with facial moko; he is flanked by illustrations of the Scottish thistle and the English rose. Immediately above the calendar is a line of three-leafed clovers, and other illustrations included a boy and girl scout, and two illustrations of a taiaha and long-handled tewhatewha together. Description: Sales catalogue for the company which merged in 1918 with the Farmers' Union Trading Company, to become the Farmers' Trading Company. Inside front cover shows a calendar for the last part of 1915, and January-September 1916. There is a foreword by company founder Robert Laidlaw, photographs of the Auckland sales staff, photographs of the showrooms of each department and portraits of the staff who ran them; photographs of office staff at work and the shop equipment (entrance stairs, elevator, employees dining room, currant cleaner and raisin stemmer, the packing department), and an illustration of the warehouse on the corner of Hobson and Wyndham Streets. There follows an advertisement for the company's book of plans and specifications for houses, and an account of the way the war was affecting prices and supplies of goods (See pages 18-21). Information about ordering, paying and freighting follow. Description: Shows the buildings of a small Maori village, with a raised storehouse in the centre, buildings to the left and right. The storehouse has three carved figures, one on the ridgepole and one on either end of the sloping bargeboards. In the centre foreground, a small figure tends a horse which is eating from a dish. A calf is tied in the left foreground. Five figures sit on the ground at the left just behind the storehouse. The building at the right is probably a stable and has a saddle hanging on the door. In the background is a low bushcovered hill. Description: Interview with Marjorie (Madge) Edna Peach (nee Williams). Born in Methven in 1919. Backgrounds her parents Ivy Williams (nee Young) and Charles Williams. Refers to her father being a champion runner known as the 'Queensland Hurricane'. Says her father had West Indian on his birth certificate, but was referred to as an Aborigine. Explains being one of 20 children, a mix of two families. Describes father's saddlery in Methven Square. Details process of making saddles using English imported leather, beeswax, black wax, hemp string, horse covers. Mentions Newmans Stables in Methven. Says father worked overnight to fix binders and broken battens during harvest time. Recalls harshness of The Depression, her father walking miles to ask for bills to be paid. Comments on declining use of horses and tractors coming in. Talks about her father making trotting harnesses and pack saddles for back country. Talks about leaving school at 14 or 15 years old. Recalls first jobs at Riverbank farm, Christies farm, working for the Ensors on Double Hill Station and an isolated North Canterbury farm. Says she returned to work for Doctor Wallace, Methven, due to homesickness. Recalls meeting her husband Thomas (Tom) Leslie Peach at bicycle race at Mangin's block. Mentions her husband making as much money riding his bike as a teamster in a year. Describes his work as teamster and wood cutter. Says they went fruit picking at Nelson before their three daughters were born. Comments that Tom Peach was held back from World War Two service. Describes his work at the flax mill in Methven. Mentions woman were conscripted to work at flax mill, coming from Rakaia to live in huts for the week. Says Tom Peach went back to the bush after flax mill burnt down and worked for Cochrane's Sawmill. Recalls starting work with husband in 1963 in the bush, then going fire wooding with him. Recalls floods from Dry Creek coming down Mount Hutt Road. Talks about social activites in Methven, the swimming baths at the domain, live pigeon shooting, races, the show, silent pictures at old town hall. Mentions Temperance. Describes Methven shops, Friday Night shopping, stock movement, sale days and dipping yards. Talks about growing own vegetables, fruit making jams and sauces and home life before electricity.
